A Pete Reading Barbel Pin donated by Pete himself..

The Pete Reading Barbel Pin is a highly engineered but robust reel, primarily designed for legering for barbel, although the reel performs as well as the original Swallow when used for trotting for roach, dace, chub or grayling.

It also makes an ideal tool for margin fishing for carp and tench.

The reel was designed by the late Hans Juhkental, who improved on the original Dave Swallow centrepin.

He was a talented engineer, a real perfectionist, and the Pete Reading reel was only produced after a series of trials and prototypes were extensively tested.

The current stock of reels is now down to less than eighty reels, and this is a true limited edition, no more will be manufactured. Every reel is individually numbered.

Hard anodised bronze finish and handsome perforated drum give the reel a most attractive look and feel.

The lever check may be adjusted by tensioning the spring, and the check assembly and backplate should be regularly cleaned, and moving parts kept lightly greased. The bearings are sealed, so no lubrication should be applied to the drum. Two high quality ball bearings are contained within the substantial solid drum.

The central drag mechanism is engaged and disengaged by a quarter turn of the knurled button in the centre of the drum, and only light pressure is needed. Do not over tighten .The drag is designed to slightly resist the rotation of the drum, and has a very small range of adjustment.

The drag enables line to be threaded through the rod rings silently, and to provide tension when the rod is in rests or on the bite. The drag system prevents overruns on fierce bites, and enables the reel to be used when floodwater fishing, when run of the mill pins are prone to give line under pressure and give an annoying tick tick every few minutes!

Some owners actually fish with the reel in silent mode, dispensing with the check/ratchet altogether.

It is best to disengage the drag and the check as soon as a fish is hooked.
